Dramatically positioned above the small, picturesque village of Vianden, this spectacular, medieval castle dates from the 9th century when it was built on the ruins of a Roman fort. Since then the castle has been extended and enlarged at various periods, and its most spectaular features are from the 11th to 14th Centuries. Once the seat of the Counts of Vianden, it passed to the Nassau dynasty but eventually passed into ruin. It became government property in 1977 and is being restored. Many of the castle`s galleries and rooms are open to the public.
