Guarding the valley of the Alzette River are two massive towers built by French military engineer Vauban, after he captured the city of Luxembourg from the Spaniards in the 17th Century. Having recognised weaknesses in the city`s defences, he strengthened the fortress by building more walls and forts. In the valley below the Pfaffenthal, he built these towers beside the River Alzette, linking them with the new walls. Between the towers, known as the Eicher Gate and the Siechen Gate, is a narrow bridge called `de Beinchen`.
