A church was built on this site in 1606, at about the same time as Neumunster Abbey. It was the place of worship for the Benedictine monks. The present St John`s Church dates from the late 17th Century and it has some Renaissance features and a fine baroque interior. One of the greatest treasures of the church is a Black Madonna who is reputed to be able to work miracles. It was created in the 14th Century.
