Schengen Castle was rebuilt in 1812, but it still retains a 13th Century tower. French writer Victor Hugo stayed here in 1817 and the tower can be seen in some of his drawings. During the 20th Century, the castle was occupied by the Sisters of the Order of Elizabeth. It was refurbished in the year 2000 and is now a conference centre. Of special interest is the baroque garden and the herb garden containing aromatic plants from EU countries.
