This fine square, near the Notre-Dame Cathedrale, was redesigned in the 1980s during a district restoration project. A refuge belonging to the Abbey of Clairfontaine, that gave the square its name, once stood here but it was demolished in the 1930s. The square is now graced by the statue of Grand Duchess Charlotte who lived 1896 to 1985 and ruled from 1919 to 1964. The monument, designed by the French sculptor Jean Cardot, was unveiled in April 1990.
