Pettingen Castle, now in ruins, dates from the early years of the 13th Century. It was defended by a fifty feet wide moat and a surrounding wall with several towers, two of which are still standing. The castle has been rebuilt several times. Its main gate and stone bridge are thought to be 18th Century. The castle has been in the care of Luxembourg State since the late 1940s. Pettingen lies a short distance north of the town of Mersch.
