Dating from the 12th Century, Mersch Castle has a long history. At one time it had a moat. The Burgundians destroyed the fortress in the 1450s and, after it was rebuilt, the Dutch attacked the castle in 1603. After another rebuilding, it was destroyed again in 1635. The castle was bought by the Comte d` Autel in 1700, and the gateway with its watchtowers dates from that period. The castle fell into ruins again, but it has now been renovated and houses the municipal services.
