During the Middle Ages, Vianden was given a charter and the place became a fortified, walled town. Although by the 17th Century the wall was not needed as a defence, it was kept from falling into ruin and, in the late 1930s it became a cultural monument. The half-mile long wall surrounds the upper town. This one mile walk guides visitors to the ancient fortifications. A multi-media station and information boards explain the history of the wall and town. A booklet is available.
