Schengen lies in the extreme south-east of the Grand Duchy on the borders of France and Germany. This small village has become famous because it was here, in 1983, that the Schengen Treaty was signed. This agreement abolished border controls between the various countries of the European Union. In the visitor centre there is a permanent exhibition about the Schengen Treaty and the European Union. The centre also houses temporary modern art exhibitions.
