Created on the site of a former fortification, the park has a variety of flowerbeds as well as lawns and trees. There are also sculptures of international personages including Mahatma Gandhi. The fortress was razed to the ground in the 1860s, but part of it was excavated during construction work for the Monterey car park. Named the Lambert Redoubt, the fort was built in the late 17th Century. It had two floors and a network of underground tunnels.
